Since AE can export to .swf or .fla, is there any reason not to use AE to create all of my flash animations? I own flash 8 but find the interface counter-intuitive. (and why can’t they convert the timeline to seconds instead of frames or am i missing something?)

Anyways, I’m wanting to do just images and text fading in and out and to post them as a .swf on a website. Any reason not to do this in AE?

    Thanks in advance!

primarily because AE isn’t vector and as such creates FAR bigger files for that sort of thing than flash does. if you’re needing to do something that’ll be viewed on a cd or something similar than AE would be great, but for web stuff flash is usually still the best option.

Thanks Chris, but AE now exports text as vector art when exporting to Flash (as either a swf or fla), so I don’t see the difference…. ?

i haven’t looked into AE 7 much yet, but if it is in fact vector and scalable and the file size is comparable then go for it 🙂 only real reason to use flash would be file size considerations or if you need to add in additional controls to the movie.

It actually works in 6.5 as well. Here’s some good info for you! https://www.creativecow.net/articles/brimelow_lee/ae4flash1/ae4flash1.html

There are still issues using After Effects to create Flash animations. Flash can only accept one mask bringing in AE swfs, for instance. In the past I’ve used a Flash reduction program, Flash Optimiizer, it saves about 20% of the file size.

I’ve knuckled down and learnt how to use Flash though. It’s well worth it, although if you’re still not happy, then SWiSH Max is a cheap standalone Flash program that creates easy animations and even has guided scripting. Might be worth checking out.
