  HD Audio Codec, and DSLR Video Files

  I posted this over at the Premiere forum, but apparently got black stares from it. Hopefully it’ll fare better here.

  I’ve been under the impression that HDV and AVCHD video use some kind of MP3 variant as a codec for audio when recording. I’m recording HD video with a pair of Nikon DSLRs (D600 & D5100), as well as a little Canon S110, and notice that the MOV files generated show their audio to be uncompressed.

  I was kinda surprised about this, but I was further baffled that when I made a project in Premiere Pro CS6, using the default DSLR 1080 24P sequence setting, it exports an MPEG file that has compressed audio. I click on “match sequence settings” when exporting the sequence out in PP.

  So I suppose I’m asking two questions here, the first is does HD footage, whether it be HDV or AVCHD, normally record uncompressed audio? If so, and apparently so in my case considering all three cameras appear to show uncompressed audio when I view the file details, why does PP output a file to supposed “DSLR video” specs with compressed audio? Oddly enough the output specs in the PP export window declares the audio to be UNCOMPRESSED.

  AVCHD normally features compressed audio though some cameras offer uncompressd as an option.

  The D600 and D5100 record uncompressed audio. The S110 I don’t know so I’d expect compressed audio.

  With Premiere you’d want to match your composition / sequence settings to source settings to be sure that your comp settings, as you desire, inc uncompressed audio. If you want uncompressed audio and your preset features compression then make yourself a custom preset or try a full-HDTV preset maybe ..
