External Mic cables are dangly – what do you do to fix them?
Hi All.
Just about to film a test project with my 600D – and have been experimenting with the audio kit I own to get the best “general purpose” sound out of it. Seems my sennheiser ME-66 (XLR to mini-jack converted) with the gain down in-camera works quite well… and I have a hotshoe adapter so it sits firmly on top.
Only thing is the XLR-minijack cable is about 20cm too dangly and you can hear it move about. What do you do about that ? Masking tape it shorter? Tape it along the camera body? I can’t seem to find a way to stop it wandering.

You can get short “coiled cables” that will stretch out to required length but not dangle around loosely.
Like this; https://www.beachtek.com/products/accessories/rc35/Use a good quality “shock mount” for your mic.

I use these guys, called “one-wrap” ties, from Velcro – I buy them in a roll at Home Depot – a fifty pack roll is under five dollars:

They come in black and grey, so I can use whatever color I want to have them disappear or stand out, if needed. The 8 inch x 1/4 inch ones give me enough play to wrap the part of a cable I don’t use with the beginning of the tie, then do the wrap up of the “live” cable with what’s left. They work way better than tape, and no residue.

Gaffers tape and zip ties. Cheap and easy.

You could always cut the cable and resolder it the correct length. Thats a 30 sec job.

If you decide to use tape use “Camera Tape” rather than Gaffer tape or electrical tape, it doesn’t leave sticky residue all over your cables and equipment.
