Whoa! Ki Pro just got some competition
I just read an article about an HD SDI recorder for $1500 from a company I’ve never heard of (Atomos?). It allows HD-SDI or HDMI recording, with a monitor screen, and instant converter to ProRes HQ.

It looks amazing – and now I really wish Magic Lantern would work for the 7D so we could fix the cruddy HDMI out video quality. This way we don’t need Canon to provide us with higher bitrate recording. So awesome.

I saw this at IBC. While on specs, it seems a match…. i was not that impressed with its build or quality.

The only HDSLR camera this will work with is the Panasonic GH2 which is the only HDSLR camera capable of giving a clean video out via its HDMI port.

Yeah no track record from this company- I’d wait and see how it fares over the next couple of months before making any jumps unless need is super urgent.

I contacted Atomos direct. They themselves make no claims at all about the Ninja recording from HDSLRs that don’t put out a clean video signal through the HDMI port (their web site clearly states this).
A lot of bloggers have mistakenly assumed it will.
Until the camera manufacturers change this the HDMI in will only be useful on cameras like the Pana AF100, Sony F3 etc. as well as the Panasonic GH-2.

The people on Convergent-Design has tested most cameras and they haven’t found no one giving an standard full quality signal. For their NANO-Flash this would have been a very profitable market, but they discourage people of buying the NANO to record from any DSLR.

yeah I’ve been hearing mixed signals about the signal out of the GH2. Comes out full 1080p but with some frame rate and chroma sampling issues. That said, at the right ISO the internal AVCHD is fine for most work I’m doing with the camera. Is it a mini-AF100- of course not. Would you notice the different on Vimeo- probably not…

If the Magic Lantern software ever gets updated to handle high quality live view from HDMI, this could be pretty useful. Or if Canon updates the software to provide what everybody has been asking for for a hundred years….but I won’t hold my breath on that one.
I’m mostly intrigued by the HD-SDI out. Just having the SDI card in a Panny Pro Plasma display is about a grand if I remember correctly. This ‘could’ be useful one day.
