    Hi Everybody,

I have following problem with time ticking against me.
My first feature documentary film is accepted in a big festival – which is very, very soon.
The offline is finished and since the movie was started in 2011 it’s still done in FCP 7.
The tricky thing with the doc film is, that half of the material is in SD and half in HD.
Beside the HD parts that were shot with the EX1 (these are only re wrapped by FCP’s Log&Transfer tool), all else is in Apple ProRes or ProRes LT.
Since all festivals insist on a HD DCP, I have to rebuild the original Timeline (SD, 720*576, Anamorphic) to a HD Timeline.
I was hoping the upres of the SD to HD can be done in DaVinci on final output.
So, I build a test sequence in HD, putting the HD Material back to original size and blowing up the SD footage (266%).
When importing the XML of this timeline, the HD footage came in right, but the SD Footage, resized on the FCP timeline came in 2-3 bigger than the HD canvas.
Why DaVinci read the sizing information so wrong?
Anybody knows a solution to this?

    Hi Massimo,

    What do you mean?
Yes, I’m the rebuild HD timeline the aspect ratio of the clip is correct.
    It also looks perfectly OK.
Only after importing the XML to DaVinci, the sizing info see,s to be messed up.
But also not in AR way, but simply by being 2-3 too big.

I mean the PAR of sd lips in resolve is correct? If you look ar clip attribute for those clip is anamorphic? If you send to me the xml, I can investigate on this.

    Hi Sacha

Looks like the SD material is resized (blown up) twice. So perhaps this is happening (but not sure): in FCP7 it is scaled and then Resolve sees SD material and scales it again

Try another test sequence in FCP7, don’t blow up the SD material and see if Resolve interprets this correctly and blows SD up to HD

And what codec is the SD material? I had some strange issues with DV material from FCP7->resolve, not reading the stop and start from all the clips correctly out of the big DV stream. (So a lot of clips looking the same, all the beginning of the bg DVstream) What helped me then is to convert the DV stream to one big proress; relink and then all things went ok. So also perhaps resolve is struggling with the SD codec material?

    Hi,

I will check about the PAR, it’s in the Colour Studio, where I have access only tomorrow again. But I can mail you the XML.
    That would be great.
    THANX!

    Hi Richard,

about the double re sizing: That is the thing that also came to my mind already
The SD Material was Captured through FCP and are DV-PAL QuickTime files.

    Hi Sasha,
I had a look on your XML. everything seems to be fine, have you tryed to deselect “use size information” just to see if resolve try to conform the original sd clip to fit hd timeline before add the size info (in this case it add a scale on conformed clip and the result is double scaling).
    let me know.

Resolve has a love/hate relationship with input sizing and “use sizing information”…

It is doubling the instructions if you have the project settings… Image Scaling defaulted to bring in mismatched source media “scale to fit ” or stretch, or anything else…

Its a pain, but you might be able to un-check the PTRZ transforms in the Edit Inspector, or re-set them to unity.

Yup, makes sense. Will try that one!
    Another Q:
Which of those 3 will do the Best upscaling?

After Effects CC (new detailed upscale plug in)
    Compressor with Frame Controls On
    or
    DaVinci’s internal Scale Algorithms?
