Does AE calculate layers not seen by camera?
HI folks,
I’m not sure how to articulate this properly, but does AE calculate objects/layers that the camera can’t see?
I don’t mean the visibility is switched off, I mean it’s out with the frame.Does that make sense?
Im moving a camera across lots of pre-comps with the aim to pull back and reveal them all at the end.
Im halfway through and its starting to get sluggish although all the previous pre comps aren’t “seen”.Hope that makes sense!

My tests indicate that 3D comp layers that are completely outside the viewing rostrum are not rendered (unless referenced by another layer as a source).
Just one pixel in? The whole thing must render.
Lots of other things affect performance. Your system configuration, memory/multiprocessing settings, effects, motion blur, camera depth of field, etc. There are some good tips for working faster here:

I have turned off all the ‘heavy’ things like blurs and the resolution down to 25%, I just wondered if turning off Precomps outside the camera’s view does anything (I did try and it didn’t do anything either).
I know that working in 3D apps everything you build gets rendered for shadows, etc. I just wondered if AE was the same.BTW, Im using all 2D layers and the ‘camera’ is really a Null object parented to all the precomps.

Comparison with 3D ray-tracing isn’t quite the same, but I see your point. If the off-screen layers were casting shadows into the scene, they would be rendered.
Layers with no impact on the output are not rendered.

What version of AE are you in and what OS are you on? There are some pretty bad playback issues with AE on OSX Yosemite at the moment that got a little better in 13.6.1 but aren’t solved completely.

Im still on Mavericks, so its not really an OS issue.
It was more a general question rather than a specific problem, I just need to remember and work smarter (image sizes, etc).
