    Hi all,

I have never worked with DPX at all but might be needing to soon. I’ve done some googling but have not been able to find either a calculator or chart showing DPX file sizes. Any pointers?

    Thx

by heart i would say about 8mb per frame (hd). but if you have davinci, just render in dpx with whatever specs your project has and know it for sure…

It’s quite easy calculating it yourself:

    H * W * No. channels / 8 * bits per channel / 1024 / 1024 = MB per frame

So for a DPX file in HD (1920×1080) with 3 channels (RGB) in 10 bits you’ll have:
    1920*1080*3/8*10/1024/1024=7.42 MB

For 10-bit DPX you lose 2 bits per pixel since 30 bits are stored in 32 bits. So size is 1920*1080*4+8192, about 8.x MB.

This is a good number to work with (8 MB/frame).

Think in terms of 10 or 11x ProRes, or about 11 GB/minute for 1080p23.98 for example.
