You might want to try using an appropriate LUT, slog 2 and slog aren’t siblings so much as cousins. They don’t share LUTs.

Heres one from Andy Shipsides, which might be useful.

    Hello Juan,
Thanks for the response. I tried those LUTs, but they don’t come even close. The ACES Slog2 to 709 works the best for average DR. You just have to pull back on the blacks a little.
My problem is when I have to pull back exposure to get highlights from clipping so the mids (faces) under expose a little. When I bring it up then blacks brake up an pixelates. The same clips without ACES Slog2 to 709 are easily corrected.
I just wish there would be an ACES Slog1 to 709 preset. It makes life a lot easier. I made my own and even though it works better for me than the downloadable options, it is still not as complete as the one made for Slog2.
I’m not a Colorist and just started using Resolve 9. I was using FCP7 and Color before, but Resolve is mush better and I don’t need to have clips sent from FC.
I just read that are originally from Miami. Trust me I’m thinking of moving too. I lived 6 years in West Hartford Connecticut and loved the 4 seasons. Born and raced here in Miami, but it is not the place for our industry.

Ahhhh, sorry. You didn’t mention you were working in ACES. I’d strongly recommend not doing that, particularly if you’re not using a supported IDT.

Those LUTs will work perfectly in YRGB color science.

    Douglas,

I think I’m confused whether you’re working in ACES colorspace or not. You mention making your own, which hints you’re making LUTs. Maybe you were saying that after trying ACES you tried to make a LUT to match?

There’s no making anything under ACES, the IDTs are either there to use for the camera or not. But I think you know this.

I understand your frustration though. Sony should have braindead SLog + SLog2 LUTs for all Sony camera owners to use. Alexa has this. We need it too.

It is possible to make a new LUT off of the original Sony 1D LUT that has a nice highlight rolloff and some saturation added. Have you tried that?

I know that you can’t change or create anything ACES. In ACES using Slog2 in and 709 out most of my clips looked good as a starting point. It is only those clips that I had to underexpose to protect the highlights that I couldn’t recover due to black clipping under ACES Slog2. I graded those clips separately without ACES with no problem.
