    Hi guys…

is anyone using animated masks intensively ?
I am about to plan a project with a lot of animated masks and the stability is as bad as it was last year that time.
I am talking about masking people walking and stuff.
So roughly 15 points and then a keyframe every 5 frames or so.
I can make Resolve 9.0.4 crash every 30 minutes or less moving points around.
I really wanna keep the masking inside Resolve, but maybe its worth the hassle of exporting if we cant get the stability.
We will have 5 people masking at the same time on 24 shows with 30 minutes each..
Its a lot of masking 🙂

    Hi Sascha,

I just did a commercial with a lot of animated masks last month. I had so much trouble that I simple re-installed the old 9.0 beta version.
That is the last version I can remember that had no big issues with this.

I would get this army of people and attack it maybe with mocha pro maybe ?

i find resolve masking not so precise and controllable as i would like.
more like approximation in some cases.
i have more post experience and there you like really tight control of your masks.

would this be option for you – make mattes in .mov files instead of internal masks?

[Margus Voll] “attack it maybe with mocha pro maybe ?”

No maybes about it. Especially for the ghost shots that I was seeing, this would be a cakewalk for MochaPro. Hardly any heavy roto but the ability to track perspective and obscured objects outranks Resolves’s multipoint tracker, plus there is the ability to parent tracks to multiple shapes and establish linked hierarchies. Very fast, very precise, exports shapes, data, camera solutions to a multiple number of compositing applications.

yeah i really like mocha masking abilities.

and you said it. no point tracker. more like are tracker with ability to see behind the corner and
    mask out obstructions.

something that any point tracker fails.

    Guys, thanks for the suggestions…
I know Mocha can squeeze this out pretty accurate, but as it looks right now, they dont have to be so accurate.
We did the last years show the exact same way and 4 people animating masks was quite ok..
The beauty of staying in Resolve is that we dont have to export and reload 2400 shots.
Also using external masks is terrible, we did that on one show and trust me , linking 150 shots with masks is far from being fun.

Stig, you also had it crashing left and right ?
Thats what I want to tackle…
Lets bombard them with crashlogs based on masking.
I am very sure there is something wrong in the code, and its there since V8.

Same problem, but for some reason the old 9.0 beta version didnt crash so I reinstalled for this particular case.

I think it happens most of the time when I click next to an existing point and Resolve creates a new one.
Also deleting unwanted points causes the crashes.
What if we could start with moving those create and remove functions to a CTRl-click gesture ?
I spend a lot of time removing unwanted points that are created accidentally when i just try to move a point
Also I would love to NOT move the handles when I am trying to move a point.
An easy solution would be to hide the handles until one hold down SHIFT.
Then it could hide the points and display the handles only.
That would help clearing the whole thing up 🙂
