Is it to good to be true?
Wouldn’t this be perfect for Resolve users?
Does it not obviate a Mac Pro?
I just found out about this today, but can’t find any user reviews online. Does anyone know anything about it?

You can use a BMD Intensity Pro or DeckLink.
I tested with their Tempo SSD Pro and had 15fps with RAW from BMCC (thanks John Brawley).
With any HD format its butter.
Cant use it as GPU expander though.
All in all, a great addition to the Retina. -
Wait, I don’t understand. I thought that it specifically was a GPU Expander.
If it can host a Red Rocket, why not an Nvidia Quadro 4000?

Thunderbolt only supports 4 PCI lanes. The following is on the Sonnettech webpage.
“The PCIe slot will physically accommodate up to a x16 PCIe card, however the actual electrical bandwidth of Thunderbolt is x4.”

The Mac OS does not support GPUs over Thunderbolt-PCI. Any other card is supported.
I’ve just got a Mercury Helios Thunderbolt-PCI from OWC. It works just fine for connecting an Atto SAS card to a MBP.

I have one. It’s awesome. We use it with a mac mini, a Small Tree ethernet switch and an Areca 1882x RAID into a ProAvio 8MS to feed ProRes streams over ethernet to 4 rooms. I cannot comment on the 4000 usability, but it does have it’s own power supply unless I’m mistaken.
It’s MUCH bigger than it looks in pictures. There a 3 slot enclosure also from Magma, but they were backordered forever so I went with Sonnet.

Same here Neil. Magma back order pushed us to the Sonnet.
Love the case. Handles RED ROCKET and a Tempo SSD Pro with two Crucial M4 512GB SSD set to RAID 0.
Getting wicked speeds using Black Magic Disk test.
Too bad about GPU but add another Echo and you can load that with more options. Makes a great DIT mobile using a Retina or any new MBP with TB 🙂
