PCI-e external boxes with Thunderbolt I/O announced
Announced a few days ago (Engadget and elsewhere) is an External PCI-e box marketed to video professionals that uses Thunderbolt i/o.
The box is made by Netstor. Unknown to me. Pricing is yet to be announced.

Does anyone here have information close to the source on this?
They mention dropping in NVIDIA cards, SAS cards and so on in some of their press announcements. It appears they get it. No mention of how many lanes the slots have or if there are bandwidth restrictions somewhere along the datapath.

Current tbolt is roughly pcie x4 lanes. So the equivalent of the slowest slot in the current Mac pros.
There have been several other pcie to tbolt chassis announce, some go back almost two years. None have shipped. This is a bit of a pipe dream right now.
By the time CUDA processing over tbolt is truly a reality I suspect nvidia will have released a line of thunderbolt tesla boxes.

Well, just a bit of correction here, both Sonnet Echo Express PCIe (1 slot) and Echo Express Pro PCIe (2 slots) are shipping since last week and Magma ExpressBox3-T is shipping as well. SO, that makes several choices possible at different price points right now.

They claim 2 of the 3 slots have 8 lane data paths. No 16x yet which is a real bummer.

I thought it had been confirmed that graphics cards will not work over thunderbolt on OSX

If you look at the Intel white paper on Thunderbolt it is clear that TB is a PCIe X4 interface. Maybe with the new MBP with two TB ports somehow they have combined two x4 lanes to get x8 throughput?
I believe that Apple has stated that there is not GPU support over TB but maybe that will change with drivers.
Still not desktop power in a laptop but pretty interesting if you want to do on set Color work.

Is the Magma really shipping now? Their website just says “Preorder now” like it has for ages… I thought the Sonnet had been shipping for a while, though.

Indeed, Sonnet has been shipping for two weeks from now. Magma has started shipping pre-production units. We received and tried out both units. They’re a go for the RED Rocket and DIT stuff using a MacBook Pro.. But some restrictions apply with the current RED driver which does not support hot plug and play.
