  • Question about masks, noob alert.

    Hi!
I am confused about using masks.
Normally I don´t use them this way but today I did, got confused and need answers. 🙂
I have attached a simple comp in this thread explaining my problem.
Basically I have added 2 shape layers, one slightly on top of the other.
I precomposed the top one and created a mask so the bottom one can be seen through the hole.
If I select add for the mask everything works as expected when I change the opacity of the mask but when I set the mask to subtract it is doing the opposite to what I want when adjusting opacity for the mask.
I am thinking that the opacity affects what is in the mask but it is the other way around.
If I want to keep the big red square and adjust the opacity of what shows through the mask, how the *%&/ do I do that? (attached comp made in ae 2015)

    Best regards

    Thanks for the reply.
I will post a video instead that explains what I am asking.
As already said I created 2 solids and put a mask on the top one.
When I set the mask to add, the opacity value fades the blue box instead of the content inside the mask.
How can I change the opacity of the inside of the mask with the blue box intact?

As you probably figured out, opacity affects the entire layer, not the masked area.

Make a copy of the blue solid, put the mask on one of them to create the hole. Change the opacity of the other copy (the one that doesn’t have a mask).

Thanks but what is the point of having the opacity option on the mask if it does the same thing as the opacity for the whole layer?

If you have multiple masks, set to different modes, the opacity will behave differently.

Right, there’s an opacity setting for individual masks as well…

To do this with one solid you’d use two copies of the same mask, the first one set to subtract 100% opacity creating the hole, the other one set to add, changing opacity, filling it back in. Also, you could now fade the outside without affecting the inside by changing the opacity of the first mask.

Cool, thanks Kalle. Just the answer I was looking for. 🙂
