Grading suite lights
I’ve read Hurkman’s book, and it details the lighting setup for a grading room too.
I’ve got only two problems/questions:
– the two companies he mentions for buying tubes from (Sylvania and CinemaQuest) are located in the US, and can’t find an european reseller. Is there any? Or what kind of tubes would I want?
– what about LED lights which are rated for 6500K?thank you

Take a look at coollights.biz they have some nice DIY style kits with fluorescent tubes and ballasts for film production and the ballasts will drive two tubes which you can get in daylight or tungsten balance.

Before you kill yourself & spend a fortune on anything, if I were in your position I’d definitely at least have at look at some consumer-grade daylight color-temp LEDs.
As far as color, I don’t know what the tolerances are for the consumer-grade LED stuff – and I don’t know of anyone taking a light meter to the task to either confirm or deny whether this is a good idea or not, but I doubt it’s that far off. I do know that “batches” of LEDs can vary from one manufacturing batch to the next, and that there is a visible-to-me tolerance between what is an acceptable variance and what is not. My bet it that if you got fixtures from a single batch of LEDs, you wouldn’t notice the difference, but don’t plan a facility around that advice.

I have a color temperature meter and I tested 2 $10 dollar bulbs that claimed to be 6500K
One was 7200K (Verilux) and the other 7500K (Longstar)
I posted a similar question a couple weeks ago and got a few interesting options. I haven’t tried any yet.

So far I generally like Cine Fluorescents more than LED fixtures, unless you get a very expensive LED fixture the output will be spikey and off color. Art Adams recently did a very good review with pictures of the various LED fixtures available for Film and Video ( https://tinyurl.com/d395ufb ) I liked the look of the Mole Richardson best but it’s $4K or more.
