I just got my EVGA GTX570 back from David Pirinelli at MacVidCards. I have the 2.5GB model. My hope was to have a Resolve that can run “OK” off of a single GPU for GUI and processing and for other GPU apps… such as Smoke, MC and Adobe CS.

I have not done extensive testing, but I just ran a 23.976/1080 ProRes project that is single layer.

Basically 10 Nodes, one node with a blur and one with NR Radius 3 and am getting 16 FPS. If I kill the NR I get 24fps solidly. Also have scopes running on 2nd monitor.

    The system:

    Mac Pro 12-core 2.66 GHZ
    48GB
    10.7
    Resolve 8.2 (non-beta)
    GTX 570 2.5 GB

Also running dual monitors… 27″ HP ZR2740w via DisplayPort and 25″ Dell on the dual-link DVI port.

Not too shabby. This system also has Pro Tools HDX, Atto 42-es and Decklink HD Dual-link card. Will be opening an Epic 5k show on it later.

Prior to the Mac Vid Cards firmware update, it ran much slower. All PCI info shows up and card is reported to the system as GTX 570 w/ 2.5 GB VRAM. Link speed says 5.0 GT… it used to show up as 2.5 GT!

Anyhow, hats off to David. The 570 seems to be the price, power and VRAM sweet spot.

I’m interested in this card myself, as I cannot get a Cubix right now. Do you have any RED 4K material? Would love to hear if it’s as stated on eBay, that you can render 4K without problems.

It has been discussed here also that for 4 k you needed some 1,78 gb etc for rendering.

It came up with 2 gb 285 cards as they now can do 4 k memory size.

I would go with mac vid version 570.

I have an Epic 5k short project I’m working on. I had started it on my PC resolve that has a Quadro 600 + GTX285. We shall see. So far the Mac Pro with single GPU “seems” to be doing better then the 285/Q600 combo… but no real testing yet to confirm. Just a single 24p HD ProRes project.

    Hello Jonathon,

I am interested in building a similar machine as yours. How well does it work with ProTools on the same machine? In addition is the GTX570 not only the GPU but also the GUI? Aside from Resolve, what else do you have in the Mac Pro.

    Thanks! Dennis

    Hi Jonathon,

May I ask what kind of storage subsystem are you using from this system? Thanks

I have 2 different FC RAID’s as direct attached storage. I have an Infortrend 8-bay fibre channel RAID and a 12-bay Xyratex fibre channel RAID. I connect to them with an ATTO 42-es. I’m pretty sloppy with the storage. I could actually get a lot more performance out of them If I worked at it a bit. At some point I may switch them over to an Xsan or Fibrejet so I can share them. I only have 750 GB ES.2 HDD’s which I’ll switch out with 2TB HDD’s as soon as the price for enterprise drives drops enough.

For DAS you are better of with SAS. Much less expensive and simpler to configure. Best bang for buck is an ATTO SAS RAID card with a used SAS chassis from ebay… load it with 1TB enterprise HDD’s.

Don’t bother with FC unless you need a SAN.

How much does David charge for the modification? I’d like to send my 570 in but am not sure how to contact him.

I tried that but he told me he can’t discuss this kind of job on ebay. So I gave him my contact info but he never replied. I’ve tried to contact him on other forums but still nothing. Strange it’s like he doesn’t want the business. I’m hoping he sees this message and gets ahold of me otherwise can you recommend someone else who can do this kind of mod?

What kind of frame rates did you end up getting with this card running resolve with the RED footage. Were you able to run on the “half res good” setting? Do you run FCPX at all?
