Resolve on 27” Radeon iMac – No problems?
Hey guys! This is my first time posting in the CC forums so…here I am. *pose* *fall* *ow*
So, here’s a question that’s been bugging me a little bit lately. Although “bugging” might not be the most appropriate way to put it, because in all actuality, this conundrum is proving to greatly benefit me. At least in the short term.
I recently got interested in moving my grading services from Apple Color to DaVinci Resolve, and around the same time got a mid-2011 model 27” iMac.
Specifically, this is what I have:
– iMac (27in)
– 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5
– 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
– AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MBI scanned through the Resolve tech-specs and began to get a little disheartened at the fact that I’d be running a non-CUDA card that’s not officially supported by 8.1. Neverthless, I fired up Resolve and gave it a whirl.
I’ve been grading exclusively with Resolve for 3 months, and it has been a DREAM. So far, no matter what format I’m grading in, be it ProRes, Arri, R3D, Resolve just screams. There’ve been a few times when I’ve had a massive amount of Power Windows on a shot and the playback has become a little bit sluggish, but nothing so much that it keeps me from doing my job quickly and efficiently.
I suppose what I’m asking is (and holy crap, knock on wood) — WHY? Why is this decidedly sub-optimal set-up tearing threw everything I throw at it with such great ease? I notice that while the 6770M isn’t listed on Resolve’s supported GPUs, yet the HD 5770 IS listed. Is this somehow making this much of a difference?
Or am I just stupid lucky?
