    Hi,

Been running DR Lite on a 27″, i7, 16GB, 6970M 2GB iMac for a few days. Coming from Color i find it quite unresponsive when 5-6 nods are applied. From there on there is substantial lag when trying to apply any sort of correction to the image. Not really concerned with the slow playback….

Is this to be expected from a Mid 2011 iMac? I mean Color handles its primary and secondary corrections with no such issues… Is there any settings to be optimized for better performance?

    Cheers

You are saying you have realtime playback with a primary and 7 secondaries in Color on your iMac?

You need mac pro with fast array and secondary cuda gpu or multiple gpus to run stuff smoothly.

It was not intended to run smoothly on imac i think.

With lite everything is a bit limited. Imac does not differ from a laptop in tech sense even with i7 etc.
Gpu is what makes things fly.

Thanx for your input, guys. Im not expecting DR to playback at full frame rate. And of course Color doesn’t do that either.

What I was referring to was the lag when trying to adjust a parameter of any sort. Not even at playback. If I was to drag say the Gamma slider up or down, the actual change it the picture would lag heavily.

Glad to say I’ve realized where the problem is… Its the Flash content on a website i’ve got open in Chrome browser running in the background! As soon as I exit Chrome or even move to a page with no Flash content it all goes back to normal in DR.

    Strange that…

Flash is really cpu hungry. I used to do web stuff with it and boy did it bog down fast machine in a heart beat. Jobs did not say just for fun that flash in ipad will not happen.

I never change things during playback. That will lag. Adjust colors and all while you’re paused. The clue is that you can play through the timeline without the need to render to see it all in motion – and with sound if you’d like that.

Real-time playback after adjustments, and with sound, is something my clients love, and hopefully something they think they need. That’s what makes them come back over and over.

Some, however, don’t care too much about that. But those are the ones who’s been in the business for a long time and understands that this is serious stuff going on, when you throw RED 4K and 5K material at the computer. You can’t grade at full debayer without some extreme processing power.

DaVinci Resolve works best with CUDA GPUs anyway, that is nVidia Quadro or GeForce cards. As Margus pointed out, while you can get good performance, you might not get real-time playback.

I new flsh was cpu hungry. I even have it turned off with Mozilla on my Windows laptop and PC. But honestly did not expect it to have such an impact on my iMac!

The lag I was experiencing was with changing parameters when paused. Like I said Im not too concerned with realtime playback with the set up I have. Im getting around 22-24fps playing back 3K R3D files with 3-4 nods applied – suits me perfect!

I experienced this early in the game, last year. What I found was you can switch the grade on and off, and you should have the same performance as before.

If not, I’d suggest you contact davincihelp@blackmagic-design.com and tell them in detail what you do, what you’d expect to happen and what’s not working.

Thanks for your help, mate. Not having any flash content running on my browser seem to take care of the lag.

Jobs was criticized for his stance on Flash, but in many cases he was right about it.

It’s a mess that causes all kinds of instability that often gets blamed elsewhere.
