JL Cooper Question…
Does anybody know if the JL Cooper board will work with Da Vinci if the USB board is installed?
Based on what I’ve read, it doesn’t…. But I thought it would be worth asking since if I were to implement it into our environment it would have to be routed through our switch near the servers and not near the machine… Which shouldn’t be an issue. But like I said, I just thought I’d check.

The jlcooper works only with a network connection. And the interface version is fussy depending on the revision of the jlcooper firmware. I bought the interface and after much difficulty I discovered that it works , but not as reliably as it should. And that the keyboard mapping is incomplete. For example the 3d controls are not mapped , making it impossible to use the jlcooper when doing 3D.
Putting the jlcooper aside , we plugged in the less robust looking Tangent Wave, and it has been excellent and trouble-free.
Neither panel is in the same league as the big davinvi panel, but having had both wave and jlcooper here on our Davinci, I would advise that on my personal opinion, the Tangent panel is without doubt the one to choose.

I had a chance to use the Wave not to long ago…… I couldn’t really hang with how loud it was and how shallow the integration is. Especially for the cost.
I’ve been looking around and though the Cooper board is more, most everything seems to be 1 button press away, where as the Wave has what it has 1-(potentially)10 presses.
I’ve also been looking at the Avid board, and really as far a feature integration is concerned the JL Cooper appears to be the best without spending $30k….
But Like I mentioned, I was pretty sure the USB thing would be a no go, just seemed like it was worth asking.

I don’t know the cost of the ethernet interface, but I’m sure it’s worth the money once you’re up and running in DaVinci.
I love the panel. As you say, most of the things are just one click away. Two or three tops.
Barrie, what exactly do you mean by that statement that it’s not reliable? You’re advised not to install the JL Cooper software. If you did, that’ll make it unreliable for sure.

The Ethernet interface cost one quarter of the price of complete Wave panel. Not good value in my opinion.
I was not advised to avoid installing the jlcooper software, in fact there was a lack of info available. I called BM and the jlcooper dealer. Thy were helpful. But it was clear that I was the first person in Uk asking for installation instructions with a jlcooper.
The jlcoooer port address on my system spontaneously changes, and that is where the unreliability came from.But the main reason I recommend Wave over Jlcooper is that for 3D , the critical button mapping is missing. Compare the list of mapped functions on the BM PDF and you will see the jlcooper has about half he number of mapped functions that the Wave has.
For color grading in 2d I was happy with the jlcooper when it was working, but the lack of the rotary encoder reset functions still mean that he more expensive panel is not better to use than the cheaper one. It is better to look at.

I have worked with the JL Cooper with Color, and there it was a little fussy for sure. I am now working with it on DaVinci and It is SOLID! I love it. Though I do not do much 3D. I have also worked with the Avid Artist Series Panel. It is very smooth, but like the Wave, you have to do a lot of button pushing to get where you need to be. I am selling the Avid Panel if anyone is interested.

Where is it that you are “advised” not to install the JL Cooper software?
I only ask, because my Davinci also doubles as an FCP Online bay and it would be convenient if I could use the board for both.
Also, I’m pretty sure that the Davinci config doc tells you to follow the manufacturers installation instructions, which I believe instruct you to install the JL Cooper software…. Can’t remember…
Sorry to be devil’s advocate, but I have found almost no information as far as the installation/integration for the board. And if I hadn’t read you response to this thread, I would have installed the drives first thing and had a very frustrating morning.
All that aside, I had a very productive first day with the new board. It is a very cool piece of hardware and am happy to have it.

You can use the blue SHIFT button below 1-8 in the middle, then click the soft buttons above the ring/ball to reset the rotary knobs on the top left side.
So press and hold SHIFT+any of the soft buttons will reset whatever setting is active for the rotary knob. I use it all the time to reset saturation, hue, sizing++
