Aspiring Colorist’s European Pipe Dream
Hello,
Not sure this is the right place to ask for career advice but I figure I can at least maybe get pointed in the right direction or get the names of a few places to send my portfolio to in order to at least maybe get there advice.
I am curious to get some information on finding opportunities in Europe (Holland, Germany, London, Paris, Spain, etc) as a Freelance colorist and/or junior colorist. I am in a place in my life (early 30’s) where my lease is up here in NYC for my current apt, my family does not need my proximity as much as before at least for a few more years, and I feel like while freelance work as an editor / colorist or post-specialist is decent enough I cant help but be curious about traveling and trying other things out in my life.
I have lived in LA when I first started in post and its been 6 years or so here in NY working in post getting to a decent enough place with a portfolio and experience under my belt. I am very passionate about the field of color grading / finishing and would love to find a position or enough freelance work in Europe if possible. I know its a lot to consider, and without visa sponsorship may be really tough to work consistently without leaving every few months for a week or whatever but I want to at least know what is out there and explore the world before I have to take care of my parents in there elder years.
I want to apply to the top places in my cities of interest and just send my portfolio to a bunch of places to see what / if anything is out there. I know there is a ton of competition and this is a niche field more or less, but I cant help but dream of living in a new country and exploring the world a little bit now that I have a window of opportunity. I would of course sell and/or put into storage all of my stuff including home grading setup (Resolve/Color, plasma, wave,12-core, etc) and just go with 2 suitcases and a few friends here and there to possible couch surf while I figure out an apt and job.
Any opinions or advice would be awesome – even if its to point me in a better direction for such information / research.
Thank you in advance for your help
