  • Maintaining differing scales from FCP sequence

    Greetings group!

The manual informs me that FCP motion settings are not communicated to Resolve via XML. This may be the simple answer to my question, but wanted the reassurance of the wise.

I have a sequence from editorial of 1080 footage in a 720 sequence. They shot larger to re-frame creatively in post and the number of differing sizes is significantly cumbersome. The grade is also specific enough that it would be beneficial to work with the material in Resolve at the same scale the editors used–vignettes and such need to line up.

When working with slow-mo 720 stuff in a 1080 sequence I’ve used an input preset for 720->1080, arranged by size to isolate 720 material, and applied the preset in one go. On render I just ignore PTZR info to avoid double scaling when round-tripped back to FCP. Not so feasible here, though due to the variety of scales and same source resolution.

Does anyone have any suggestions or should I forget the XML and just bake it all in and cut it up with an EDL?

    Thank you Sirs and Misses.

Alas, I’ve run into this issue on a bunch of projects and haven’t found a great answer to mixed resolution round-tripping. I always default to doing all frame resizing in resolve now and wiping the scaling information in fcp on the return trip (unless of course the key-framing is too impossible to duplicate in resolve and then I’ll hand export those clips back). This is definitely a feature request for future versions of resolve(to do resolution independent source rendering of clips out of resolve).

i have done second timeline from resolve output with cut down scenes and copy pasted basic motion and distort etc what needed from the original shots. but for long program this is royal pain.

in the other hand maybe it will be solved by fcpx support. many requests here seem to me that
would be reasonable to wait so the fcpx thing will be clear and maybe deal with those then.

if i had product like that i would wait it to settle.

Well, thank you both for the responses. I feared that may be the case. It wasn’t too much hassle to bake it all into one export and preconform to an EDL in Resolve.

    Thanks again.

Do all these things in FCP. Get the timeline over to Resolve with XML.

In Resolve, you render and select FCP XML Roundtrip.
Then in the Conform page, Export and save as an XML.

Import this XML in FCP. It will reconnect to the graded shots. AND apply all weird transitions, scaling and so on.
