  • Should I have exported from FCP with handles?

Posted by Romina Rey on July 6, 2011 at 11:34 pm

I edited a music video and just exported the XML for the colorist to grade in the Davinci.
However, he asked for me to removed the crossfades that the video had and and leave the
clips as clean cuts so that he may color correct the clips better.
So, should I have given him a sequence or XML with handles on the clips that are to have
the crossfades or once I bring the finished product back into FCP I should be able just
to place the crossfades where they were initially without a problem?

    Thanks

Hi, with Resolve 8.0 now reading FCP7 XMLs that include cross fades you should be able to send the XML, have the source clips graded and hav resolve send the XML back to FCP7. In Resolve the colorist can see the clips in unmix mode so the crossfade does not affect the grade. That being said it’s also been common in the past to export clips with handles especially if the facility editing is different to the facility grading. This way if the edit changes after the grade, you have a few frames/seconds either side of the original edit already graded.
