I’ve been trying to find the system requirements for Resolve 8 online. I’m on a Mac Pro 1,1 8×2.66 (installed the quad cores). I already know there’s an issue with this machine for the current build of Resolve (all the PCIe slots aren’t 2.0… in fact, I don’t think any of them are). That being said, I’m trying to figure out what specs are necessary for the new Resolve. I found the specs necessary for 7.1.2 here, though it doesn’t say anything about PCIe 2.0 (I do believe I emailed the developer about that). Anyway, has anyone maybe used an older mac pro 1,1? I’d be fine with non-real time performance (coming from Color), and I won’t be working with any resolutions larger than full HD (mostly Pro Res HQ). I fully realize that this is not a good solution, and I’m looking at it as a temporary one that will allow me to learn Resolve better for the time being (waiting for the new Mac Pros — or, in my ideal world, a Linux license for $1000 or a Windows version — because I would love to get off of my reliance on Apple for hardware). As an ex-Color user, I feel like I just got punched in the stomach by Apple. Over the last few days, I’ve spent a lot of time reading through this forum, and have been SO surprised by the support that Blackmagic offers. Though a bit apprehensive, I’m really quite excited to be making this move, and very VERY excited to be a part of an actual community that includes the developers (and not just the end users).

    Hey Adrian
Thanks for the link. Do you know if this still holds true for Resolve 8? I remember reading that a hardware upgrade wouldn’t be necessary, but seeing as I’m building it now — I’d love to try and optimize for Resolve 8. Is the GtX 285 and gt 120 combo still going to be the way to go for Mac Pros not using a Cubix?

    Dane,
I’m running that set up with ver 8 at home. Its working for me. Realtime dpx 2k without issues. I’m still running on my old 08 mac pro. 🙂

    Hi Dane,

While running Resolve for Mac with a Cubix GPU-Xpander attached is not for everyone, keep in mind that the PCIe x16 version 1.1 slots in your current Mac Pro will only support 40Gbps maximum bandwidth. Cubix has an 8-channel Gen2 connection option for GPU-Xpander Desktop 2 which runs several hundred dollars less than the DaVinci-certified configuration. The Cubix part no. for this optional configuration is XPDT-X8-24-OSV (-INT outside No. America), and I’ve seen them advertised online for about $1800 or so.

Davinci Resolve 9 does not support AMD cards on Windows but if you upgrade to Resolve 10 it should work on your current setup that is the AMD 6670, however if you want to run Resolve 9 on Windows you could replace your GPU to an Nvidia GPU like the GTX 570, GTX 670 or a higher model, but the best option would be to simply use Resolve 10 and your current setup should be just fine for a single GPU Windows workstation.
