Quicktime 10 & Renders
I’ll admit I don’t have a full understanding of Mac’s color profile system, but I’ve noticed that all the ProRes renders do not look right in QuickTime X (10).
Every other application capable of opening Quicktimes displays them correctly – from Final Cut to any Adobe software.
I’m trying to understand why this is and how to get around this but coming up short so far.

Quicktime 10 is a strange beast, I had made a set of 1080P 23.98 Pro-resHQ files which were film scans of mine, edited. When I played them in QT-10 they would “zoom” in and out on the video about 10% repeatedly while playing. They played fine in FCP and QT7….

QT Player X can be problematic. Make sure you have QT 7 player installed. Use the v7 player. Here is a link to the apple support site…

I guess my question is why are you expecting any sort of consistency between how apps display video?
It’s always been all over the place. Only way in my experience to look at video is out a card meant for it (AJA, BM, etc).
Just my thoughts, not trying to be a pain.

I don’t care about QT X as much, but the problem is I’ve found Mac DVD player to match the look of QTX as well. That concerns me because often screeners of shorts I do go out on DVD to fests and I’m sure often get watched on macbooks, etc.

It is for seeable like this i’d say.
DVD compresses so heavily all the material that i would be surprised if all this did not happen.
Some color is thrown away etc.—

No it’s not related to DVD compression. Here is the same DVD, the same test pattern, as played from a hardware DVD player. The gamma is perfect. The vectorscope is very good, the lines are not straight because the connexion to the Ultrascope was a composite cable, but the colors are in targets.

OK maybe audio compression made me apply this automatically to
video also. Still it feels that compression may do something bad there 😉Just e feeling not a fact.
