We’ve been happily using Resolve running realtime grading of Red raw footage using Red Rocket cards.

But since we have started shooting with the Epic-M in February we have had to go back to best-lighting first in Redcine-X as understandably Resolve cannot recognise the Epic footage yet.

I know version 8 will solve this, but as that is going to be a while still coming could there be a point release for the current software? Other third party software SDK users seem to have incorporated Epic support already?

    I second the request.
The problem is bigger because for using the rocket in RCX for Epic you need to update drivers and firmware and then it is no longer recognized in Resolve so we can’r use the rocket at all even non RED one MX shoots.

    Resolve system:
    MacPro 8 core 2010 – 16B memory
9TB harddisk (1 system disk, 8TB in software raid 0 for data)
    Nvidea GTX285
    Nvidea GT120
    Blackmagic SDI Decklink
    RedRocketcard.
    Tangent Wave panel
    Transvideo 15″ Cinemontor Evolution

Also running it on a MacBook Pro 17″ (5.2)

Given that final specs for the Epic are still to be locked in by RED, I’d say it won’t be supported until that is done… kinda no point just yet.

[Kris Anderson] “Given that final specs for the Epic are still to be locked in by RED”

They are? There’s an awful lot of Epic jobs going on in Los Angeles right now. That’s super scary if you know this to be true.

The Epics going around are hand built M’s, not production line X’s. Sold with the condition that you help RED test things, give feedback etc.

Many features are not enabled or are being enabled as they go…. Jim and co. have said this many, many times. My point is it would be hard for a 3rd party to offer full support in their product when they do not have a finished build. Look around the reduser forums, the info is there.

    From the website…

    https://www.red.com/store/epic/product/epic-m

“*We are now accepting inquiries regarding purchasing EPIC-M packages. The EPIC-M is a hand-assembled, non-production run camera so quantities available at any given time are limited. This package is intended for users who can provide testing and constructive feedback directly to RED.”

I was questioning the use of the word “specs”. Not questioning that they exist, or that they are out there, or that they are feature incomplete. I was a Red owner for 2 years, I know the drill.

I think the specs of the hardware are locked. Thats what I was talking about.

In addition, my experience is that the file format is, at this point, relatively set in stone as well. From a 3rd party, “is this software going to read this 5K r3d?” standpoint as well.

Lots of stuff is up in the air with them, but I think those points are relatively locked down.

Hi All, as demonstrated live at NAB, DaVinci Resolve 8.0 supports Epic and also HDRx. We also now have r3d decoder controls on the DaVinci Resolve Control Surface. Release is due in June. Given the continued development of the r3d SDK, Rocket Drivers and Resolve we are looking into a dot update for Epic support in 7.1 so you can use the EPIC 5K images before the 8.0 release. Stay tuned for details. We should have something next week.

Peter that is great to hear and couldn’t come sooner.

The reality is that final specs or not, we are using the cameras, we have the jobs and we are working with the footage right now.

So the sooner the tools we prefer to use such as Resolve catch up, even if they are not final or perfect in any way, the better.
