Hello I just purchased the Avid File Support for the Resolve. I have a few clients that use Avids and my objective is to grade there projects. How can I best get there project and get them back to them? They would be quite happy getting DNxHD Quicktimes back. I just found out that Resolve can’t take in DNxHD Quicktimes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am not an editor just a colorist so please be tolerant of my ignorance on this subject. Thank you. John

    Hi John,
Well I am an editor, not a colorist! And I may be sounding like a broken record at this point, but the Avid workflow for Resolve needs help.

I truly hope that v8 will be an improvement.

Currently here are issues we have seen.

First, there is no support for 10bit uncompressed .MXF from Avid. This is really needed for our workflows. We also want to see the 10bit RGB .MXF Avid codec supported.

Second, AAF needs major work. Currently, if you export an AAF and media which includes 10bit DNxHD files, those files are not seen by Resolve. We have also seen instances where the source TC of clips are not matching the AAF when they did match in the Avid.

Third, and this may be part of Two. We have seen that an AAF which is made up of a mixture of DF and NDF sources is not handled correctly. Depending on settings in the config table, clips are correct either for DF or NDF, but not both.

Fourth, when MXF is rendered out, something is missing or incorrect in the metadata. As a result, the clips will not relink in Avid. This forces you to use a render of the entire timeline rather than individual clips with handles. Not really what we are wanting in all cases.

Once again, we hope v8 addresses some or all of these issues.

    Hi Jeff,

I have not had all the problems that you have had with the Avid workflow, but I agree it needs some real work. I had a different list of problems.

I have been able to get the Resolve to see the Avid 10bit DNXHD media. Although a few times it won’t see the start TC and I have to manually change it in the Resolve.

My issue is with the AAF ‘workflow’. It really just doesn’t work very well. Our issue is that if subclips are used in the timeline, the resolve will not link properly. If we replace all the subclips (manually) with master clips before we make the AAF, it will link properly.

Obviously many of the effects either don’t transfer properly or actually will mess up the timeline (put in black holes or move it down out of sync). I am really hoping that v.8 fixes these issues. As of right now, the AAF workflow doesn’t seem to have any real advantages over EDL. Which is a bummer since the AAF can carry alot more valuable metadata than a simple old EDL.

Hello Peter, I took in the test session AAF and the linked media. All seemed good. The media all seemed in order and correct timecodes. Rendered it out for Avid as 00108000.mxf. Again all seemed good although I had no way of looking at the file. So here is the question I get back from the editor?

    Hi John,

I downloaded the file you made from YouSendIt. I think that you may need to make an AAF file for me as well–Avid sees the file you sent me as just a media file and I believe it needs some metadata (a sequence or clip) to link to that media. Can you see if you have the option to export an AAF file after you do the color correction work? Thanks.

    Steve

Is there a way to give him what he needs?

    Hi John,

No the Resolve can not export an AAF (at least at this point in time). We found that you can relink your Avid sequence to the new MXF media files. You can also use the media tool in Avid to drag the media clip into a bin if you want to be able to use the file in other sequences.

    Hope that helps.
