You’re much more likely to get a response if you use a real name. I’m not sure if this is still in the TOS, but the COW policy has been that real names are required, no handles or spam-type names. They changed this maybe about 4 years ago.
    I used to be ‘Vintendo’.

The attached files illustrate two approaches to this:
    1 – Gradient Mesh
    2 – Blend

    Blend options (CS4)
    7235_gauscs4.ai.zip

    Blend options (v.10)
    7236_gausv10.ai.zip

You’ll see two versions of the Blend approach. The lower resolution/stepped version is simply to show how you might reduce your CPU processing needs while testing. It is the same artwork, but with a lower step value in the blend.

In Illustrator or Photoshop, it should be pretty basic. I would think it would take a few seconds in photoshop or illustrator. Just create the image, lay down your colors and add a Gaussian blur. Have you tried this?

    Save early. Save often.
