I made a very complicated file in Illustrator CS5. I saved it successfully. After saving it, Illustrator crashed trying to redraw the screen. Now it is saved, but I can’t open it because Illustrator (powered by my Macbook) can’t open it. (For the record I violated a zillion best practices to get into this mess and even I know enough to hugely uncomplicate my file, but I can’t do so without opening it.)

    Anyone have any advice?

You might have to get the file onto a more powerful machine running CS5.
Or try setting your monitor resolution very low before opening.
Or try opening the file with Acrobat pro, maybe even try running it through Distiller.
Once you get it open, the first thing I might try is Select All / Object / Path / Clean Up / …
Then maybe look for additional stray points outside your artboard.
    Just some ideas.
