After Effects CC won’t stop during RAM preview
Posted by Eddy Rose on June 9, 2015 at 8:22 pmI saw a similar post to this for CS5 but there was no resolution.
Basically once my RAM preview stars there is no way to stop it short of force quitting AE. After Effects becomes completely unresponsive about 3 seconds into a RAM preview.
I’ve tried all the basic stuff:
+Pressing the number pad 0
+Pressing the ESC key
+Turning Caps Lock on and off
+Clicking on random places in AE
+Trying to minimize AEBut AE refuses to respond until the preview is done. I am working on a heavy project, but I’ve worked on faaar worse in previous versions of AE and never had to deal with this.
Any help is much appreciated!

June 9, 2015 at 9:29 pmWhat is the full version number of your AE CC? Is it 12.2.1.5? 13.2.0.49?
What are your computer specs?

Windows 7 Professional
Processor – Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-1620 0 @ 3.60GHz
RAM – 60GB
System Type – 64bitI’ll admit I’m not great with the hardware aspect of computers. But I thought 60GB was a good amount of RAM for AE…

June 9, 2015 at 10:38 pmI’ve allotted 54GB of RAM for AE.
I do not have Muliprocessing on…could that be it?

Allot less.
Seriously. Leave about a quarter of your RAM available to other applications.

I know it’s counterintuitive, but not necessarily! If you are not leaving your OS and other apps enough RAM to work, that will force the OS to swap real RAM out to virtual RAM on your hard disk.

Turn on multiprocessing for faster renders. Note that there’s a delay to get MP going, so it’s not always desirable for previews. As for your initial preview delay, is it maybe mixing audio? What does the info panel say when you start the preview?

June 10, 2015 at 6:10 pmOkay, I’ve allotted 15 MB to other programs, I think that’s helping a lot! But I’m still running into the same issue, one that RAM preview gets going I can’t stop it. I’m totally locked out of AE until it’s finished 🙁
“That will force the OS to swap real RAM out to virtual RAM on your hard disk”
Could you explain that like I’m five? I sorta get it, if I don’t give my OS enough real RAM (physical memory) it will be forced to mess with my hard disk. Why is that bad?

June 10, 2015 at 6:40 pmCould it be because I’m working off a server? This project really isn’t that heavy, it’s just a few layers of footage. One layer uses Trapcode Shine, one uses Trapcode Starglow, and a few have their levels adjusted. That’s it though…
