  illustrator cs3 vector question

  i have illustrator cs3 and i also just purchased a vinyl cutter. now for the vinyl cutting software i need to convert an image to a vector or path format. (eps, ai, ect)so i start with getting an image i want, usually a jpg image. then i put it into illustrator. this is where i’ve tried everything to get the shape of just the picture. everytime i import an image it brings just the rectangle around the whole image. i don’t want to cut a rectangle but the object inside.

  It’s called LIVE TRACE and is an option when you have the image selected. It works on high contrast or b/w images and there are a variety of pre-sets. Otherwise, you are looking at creating the vectors by hand.
