    Hi,
I never looked into expressions too much, and they are a bit scary to me, but I’m now working on something that I’m sure would be way easier that way.
I’m searching for a way to show a part of a layer based on an alpha matte. Of course, that wouldn’t even need an expression, but I don’t wanna show the exact shape of the matte, but rather have a “grid” and show the whole shape based on the layer which serves as the matte.

It’s pretty much exactly what is described here:

Unfortunately, I’m pretty lost when it comes to expressions. Can someone give me any help / directions?
