Stroke text box expression?
Hi,
I currently have an animation where I have a rectangle shape (no fill, white stroke) that “draws on” by trim paths around a date. In the future someone else (who doesn’t know AE well) will have to edit this file and change the date, so I need to make it as easy as possible for them so that all they have to do is change the text and the stroked box will adjust itself. I tried this method from Evan Abrams’ tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kI3yzx6CATg) but the problem I run into is that the stroke distorts and doesn’t stay uniform when the rectangle changes size.

Couple of different options for scaling a layer to text length here:

If you use the Generate > Stroke effect of a solid with a mask and turn continuous rasterization on, the stroke will remain the same width when scaling the layer.

Sorry, I can’t get the Stroke to appear when I do effect > generate > stroke. Could you give me a bit more step by step? Thanks!

Oops, I noticed I didn’t have “All masks” turned on, turned it on and now stroke is visible, and I turned the opacity of the fill to 0 so that looks how I want now. But the box size isn’t updating based on the text, I must have broke something

It seems to work a bit different with a masked solid.
Here’s a sample project with centered text. If you want it left-aligned, you’ll have to move the anchor point to the top left corner and adjust the position accordingly.

You’ll need to move the text box up or down if you change type size.

Awesome, thank you! Is there any way to make a generated stroke on a mask have cap ends and corners?
If there was a way to link the length of a mask on top of a pre comp of the date and box to the length of the text…? So at least the mask could “shave off” the rounded corners?
