From AE I am trying to render a fairly simple animation as an alpha, but it keeps coming out as a huge file. 5+ GB. I’m sure it is due to my lack of understanding of the codecs I should be using. Right now I’m rendering as a Quicktime movie using the animation codec.

My question is if there is a better codec that will compress the file further so my final isn’t so big. I typically render out to mp4, but with an Alpha you can’t use h.264. Is there a better configuration I could be using?

FYI, the animation is of a stopwatch with the second hand ticking by. That’s it.

The PNG codec in a QuickTime container can give smaller files than the Animation codec for images that are not large expanses of flat color.

Can you tell us what the next step is with this rendered file? It’s hard to give codec advice without knowing how it will be used.

In addition to the PNG codec Todd mentions, CineForm, DNxHD and ProRes can all carry alpha.
