Grid of 50 dots. Each one is mathematically layered on the Z position a few hundred units away from the next. Every other time in the history of my use of AE, this would obviously mean that if Dot A was at 500, and Dot B was at 200, that Dot B would be on top of A, visually.

For some unknown reason to me, despite the 3d layers- whatever layer is on top in the composition is the one that’s visually on top in the comp window. This obviously completely defeats the point of 3d.

Is this a glitch? Is there some feature that would be doing this? I’m running CS5.5. I’ve restarted AE, made a new camera, etc. Nothing fixes it.

I’ve attached my project here (400kb) if it’s needed to diagnose this:

    Many thanks guys!

There are a bunch of things that will break the 3D stacking order like (from AE help): An adjustment layer, a 3D layer with a layer style applied, a 3D precomp with an effect, closed mask or track matte, a 3D precomp without collapsed transformations.

Do any of those apply to your situation?

You nailed it, it was layer styles. I had color overlay on everything that wasn’t red. I thought I had ruled that out as a culprit due to the behavior of the layers without layer styles, but obviously not. Seems as though layer styles on one 3d layer ruins the whole order for the rest of the layers.
