Swinging shopping bag from handle.
Hello. Please bear with me.
I have my latest round of totally sweet automobile commercials to do and this month one of the event graphics has been fed to me from corporate in the form of an EPS. I have broken the EPS into the layers that I want and imported to AE as a composition. Everything is working pretty much like I want, except I think an expression can help me out. In the event graphic, there’s five bags (like shopping bags) that have a letter on each them that spell E V E N T and hang down. Each bag is on it’s own layer, then there’s 2 background layers. The bags are facing us and all on relatively the same plane. The logo comes swooping in from 3D space from behind the camera and I’d like the bags to do a little natural swing when the logo comes to a stop (the logo stops, the bags keep swinging back and forth). All I want is a very subtle swing with a natural slow down curve, meaning the bag initially swings a bit but as each bag swings back and forth each time, the swing distance becomes less and less, eventually it would come to a stop. Does that make sense? This whole thing needs to be only about two seconds of swing and doesn’t need to come to a complete stop, I just want it to look like gravity is making the bags slow down. Right now, I have keyframes, but the motion is somewhat unnatural and I know I it can be better. I have also moved the anchor point to the handles of each bag, so the swing originates from the correct point and have positioned the bags on slightly different 3d planes so that they don’t cross each other as they are somewhat overlapped in the original. Also it’d be nice if each bag had it’s own little random variation as to appear they have a different amount of Holiday Goodies in them. Have I lost you yet?
Is this a simple expression or is this something that requires a quick calc refresher, 45 lines of code, two leprechauns and a bottle of Irish whiskey? if so, no big deal and I can get by on keyframes.

It simulates gravity as a sine curve is damped to 0. Very cool for math! 🙂
