Throwing in a background without greenscreen
So recently Mackevision released a vid showing how they add in effects and stuff into Game of Thrones and I was impressed by the presentation but it left me wondering especially for the first two shots they showed, is it all just carefully crafted rotoscoping? Or is it something else entirely?

yep that’s the vid, still can’t get past thinking its just meticulous rotoscoping on the first two shots

Those shots are called “set extensions.”
Sometimes these are done as full-blown 3D shots, sometimes they are flat 2D matte paintings.
Rotoscoping isn’t generally necessary (as long as you keep the talent clear in the shot) because you are augmenting an existing environment, not completely replacing it.
