Imitation isn’t just the sincerest form of flattery. When it comes to After Effects, building on shared techniques is a great way to push the envelope. Consider Andrew Kramer’s recent tutorial on simulating raytraced reflections posted on the COW. Andrew’s technique for simulating raytracing is really cool and it works for all sorts of things. Except for 3D. When Jon Okerstrom watched Andrew’s tutorial, the first thing he thought of was Zaxwerks Invigorator and ProAnimator. Jon’s tecnique follows. Download the demo and follow along.

Hi. I bumped into a snag. I am using 3D Invig 4.06 Pro. When I dupe the Zax layer, then go into the setup screen and tumble the text, all is fine. When I exit, 3DI does not update the tumbled text. It will, if I turn off “Use Comp Cam” but I know that defeats the point of this approach.I am confused….

    This is very nice! Thanks.

One question about keeping the reflection sets synchronized to the main sets. I would think ( Dan?? ) that you can simply use an expression in the reflection sets to make their position the negative (when appropriate) to those in the main set. Wouldn’t that make it much easier to ensure proper movement of the main and reflection sets?

    Hi Joe,

Expressions linking the y,y and z position keyframes of the respective sets in the normal and reflection layers would certainly be helpful when you have lots of sets and lots of keyframes.

Give it a try and let us know if you run into any snags. Glad you liked the tutorial.

    Hi
[Joseph M. Morgan] ” that you can simply use an expression in the reflection sets to make their position the negative (when appropriate) to those in the main set.”

just pickwhip the reflection sets with the main sets and add *-1 at the end of the expression!;-)
