  • Perspective when rotating 3D shape layers on X axis

Posted by Marco Eastwood on March 6, 2014 at 12:46 pm

Hi, I’m trying to create a set of tiles using shapes with letters in them.

I want it to be a bit like a grid with the squares rotating on their x axes at different speeds.

Kind of like on a departure board or score board except that I want them to rotate as whole shapes and not split into halves.

The problem I have is when I place them close together and line them up with the edges of the comp they obviously looked skewed when they rotate because of the 3D perspective.

Is there any way of working around this??

    Thanks!!

You can switch the comp camera view from “active camera” to “front”, which is an orthogonal view with no perspective.

    Hi Erik,

Thanks for that, but is there anyway I can render out that view??

I want the squares to rotate as they do with the Front View perspective, but becuase they’re 3D layers I can’t achieve that…

Here is what I have as an example:

Is there a work around to get a series of squares rotating at the same time without having a skewed perspective??

[Erik Waluska] “You can switch the comp camera view from “active camera” to “front”, which is an orthogonal view with no perspective.”

But Ae cannot render the orthogonal views.

The workaround is to use an absurdly long camera (increase the zoom or decrease the angle of view), placed absurdly far away from the scene. This will never fully eliminate perspective, but it can minimize it to an imperceptible degree.

Thanks, I read that in another thread…

Is there a workaround to prevent squares from overlapping?

    here is what I’ve got:

Sorry, it didn’t occur to me that you can’t render the front view – I’ve never had a reason to try before.

One way around this would be to animate the Y scale from 100% to -100% instead of rotating on X. That will give you the same effect as the Front orthogonal view.

Another thing you can do is to pre-compose each block so when it rotates you don’t get the off-center skewed perspective on the blocks. They will still have perspective and the edges will still overlap but without the skewed perspective.

It’s hard to tell if the issue you have is due to overlapping or intersection. You’ll need to elaborate.

BTW, to solve your perspective issue, do the following –
    1) make your Shape Layer 3D
    2) apply effect>obsolete>basic 3D
    3) animate the tilt prop
