I’m just simply trying to mask half of my clip to make a transition. The bottom half of the clip just comes in from the left and the top half from the right. Although every time I try to mask half of it, the mask just doesn’t apply. I try to change it to subtract, or inverted but the mask just does nothing. Am I doing something wrong?

Try precomposing the footage. Layer, pre-compose.

Is the clip you want to mask, selected, did you accidentally lock the clip? Do you have any effects on the clip? Please post some screen grabs of your timeline and comp panel so we can better diagnose the problem.
