What are your current multiprocessing settings? My starting point is generally to leave a quarter of RAM available to other apps, and pretend that hyperthreaded cores don’t count (leave at least half of the CPUs to other apps — sometimes more).
I can nearly peg the processors in my 12-core HP Z800 with 48 GB of RAM with the following settings:
RAM reserved for other applications: 12 GB
CPUs reserved for other applications: 12
I generally change RAM allocation per background CPU based on experience depending on the resolution and layer-heaviness of my comp.
Remember, the goal is faster renders, and that’s not always the same thing as high utilization of any given resource. That said, we generally try to make the CPU the bottleneck because it’s the hardest component to upgrade.
