I prep my Illustrator files for import to AE by saving in RGB Mode, and after I import them I change the AI footage interpretations to “Preserve RGB”. Colours appear as they should in AE but the resulting renders always come out different with dull, lossy colours.

I’ve done a few searches that turned up a few solutions like changing the Project Settings/Output Module but none of these seem to work for me. Compressing the MOV with MPEG Streamclip gives it a slight boost in contrast but that’s about it.

Something else that’s interesting is that if I bring the rendered MOV back into AE the colours look right again.

    FIXED:

Okay, I found a fix for anyone having the same problem.

Project Settings -> Working Space: “Apple RGB 1998”
Render Queue -> Output Module -> Color Management -> Output Profile: “Apple RGB” (not “Working Space – Apple RGB 1998”)
