  • A question about building a render farm

    Hi there:

Last year I purchased a Dell Precision 650 with dual 3.2 Xeons, 4 Gigs of RAM and an Nvidia QUadroFX 3000 video card. Everything is SCSI in my system and I’ve got a Medea Video RAID and G-tech Firewire drive… and an assortment of lesser firewire drives I keep my sound effects and stuff on.

This year I want to get into hi def or just HDV and I’m learning that for my needs I may need to purchase a turnkey system with something like the Matrox Axio or a Kona card.

The system I’m looking at uses SATA drives and AMD 64 bit processors. I have two questions:

1: Can I create a render farm using this new 64 bit workstation and my current 32 bit workstation?

2: Will it work if the new computer is SATA and my current computer is SCSI?

    Thanks for any suggestions!

Although AE isn’t 64-bit yet it will run fine on a 64-bit CPU and even on 64-bit Windows.

If you want to do network rendering you can mix and match different CPU’s without a problem, although it’s better to stick to one OS.

There’s also no problem if one system uses SCSI and the other uses SATA.

When you say the sam OS, you you mean using Windows 64 on one and XP Pro on the other won’t work?

Well, I haven’t tried networking XP64 and XP Pro yet, but I think that should work well. It’s the networking Macs and PC’s that can be a bit more complicated for network rendering.
