Activity Forums Panasonic Cameras Offline edit of VariCam footage

  • Offline edit of VariCam footage

Apologies in advance, I’m not sure if this belongs here, or in the FCP forum…

I’m working on a feature shot with the VariCam. The majority of the footage was shot 24 fps.

As I understand it (and I’m a newbie to working with VariCam footage), regardless of the acquisition frame rate. the camera records at a constant 60 fps.

All of the footage was converted to DVCAM tape at 29.97 fps for the off-line edit. Do I need to make any adjustments when editing the footage shot at a frame rate “other” than 24? I’m assuming that all of the off-line work would/should be done in a 29.97 sequence. Am I correct?

    Thanks in advance!

If it’s not too late, change your workflow and import the native 24p HD via firewire. You can edit on powerbook and save yourself many headaches. The files are not much bigger than DVCAM, and you will be editing in HD!

This tutorial is a bit dated, but explains the process:

    Thanks Chris!

Unfortunately, the dump to DVCAM was done prior to me being hired for the project. I’m not sure what the reasoning was for the DVCAM offline. I was assuming file size, but apparently that isn’t (or at least shouldn’t be) a major concern.

As for the tutorial, it may be a bit dated, but it explained the process very clearly.

    Thanks again!

YOu are dealing with people with VERY antiquated ideas of a workflow. Chris is right…get a hold of the Varicam masters and capture them via firewire. DVCPRO HD 720p24 is roughly double the data rate of DV…which is really NOTHING. All that is required is more storage…you can even use FW400 drives for this, although FW800 or internal or eSATA is recommended. I have edited 4 shows this way and would NEVER consider anything else. Having NO ONLINE is a huge thing.

Seriously…NO ONLINE. Just color correct and output…done.

    Change the workflow now.
