  Uncompressed DVCPRO-HD Capture.

  These are Varicam / Final Cut Pro questions… hope this forum is ok.

  Shot on Varicam 720 24p.

  1. So do I capture 60P or 24P ? I think 24 (or 23.98)

  2. If I want to capture uncompressed from a DVCPRO-HD deck which codec should I use?
  coming out of HD-SDI on deck to Kona 3 and using final cut pro 6.0.1. I was thinking of capturing with Pro Res HQ, but I’m not sure that’s a “capturing codec” or if it’s just a codec that I can apply to a sequence after the footage has been captured.

  3. If I do capture “truly” uncompressed using one of Kona’s 10 bit codecs then which one should I use? I am thinking that “720p 23.98 10 bit Varicam” (is this correct) ?

  4. How much quality difference in between Kona 10bit Uncompressed and Pro Res HQ?

  You can capture either to a 30 frame or 24 frame timeline, using 24 saves you at least 20% in storage space.

  Because you’ve shot on the Varicam (DVCPR100) it’s only logical to post in the same codec. The ProRes codec is FCP’s way of dealing with HD-SDI inputs from other systems, mostly HDCAM that provides a storage friendly option vis-a-vis editing uncompressed HD.

  That’s the $64K question. ProRes of course has three levels, I suspect because you’re coming from DVCPRO100 it can only be that good, so the HQ level might end up using more storage for the same quality.

  One more noob question.

  I’m trying to figure out how much drive space I’ll need in the AJA data rate calculator.

  Under “Compression” there are 3 different kinds of 10 bit. I’m not sure which one is right.

  1. 10 bit YUV
  2. 10 bit RGBA
  3. 10 bit RGB

  My video settings are as follows:

  1. Presets: (Custom)
  2. Frame Size: 1280X720 HD)
  3. Frame Rate: 23.98
  4. Compression: ( ? ) one of the 3 flavors of 10 bit

  If you are going to capture Uncompressed and move out of editing @ DVCPro Hd (there’s many good reasons for this) I’d go ProRes HQ. It gives you a ton more rt than Uncompressed, is still 10 bit and full raster.

  The only down side is slow render times, but that happens in Uncompressed as well.

  Use the AJA Kona3 720p 23.98 ProResHQ Varicam setting.

  If you decide that ProRes is not for you, then use the 720p23.98 10bit Varicam easy setup. That is the proper codec to use (it’s YUV by the way).
