  • Can I get good SDI downconvert qaulity into a NLE from HDX900?

After a water accident with my Panasonic 910WA PRO50 camcorder in Sumatra a couple of weeks ago, I need to buy a new camera and lens combo. I was a tad under-insured so only have around US$45K to play with. I can get a new PAL SDX900 pretty cheap (4 weeks delivery – build to order only), but this is only a short time proposition as I increasingly shoot on hired Varicam or XDCAM HD for HD projects.

So….if I bought a HDX900, could I use the downconvert capability to capture into a NLE, and yes I know this is not ideal, but it could get me out of a hole while I got enough funds together to buy a DVCPROHD deck. I’m not a big tape shooter so the head hours thing is not an issue.

What is the downconverted quality like via SDI? It’s a hellish time to have to buy a camera with Infinity, RED, 2/3″ P2 and 2/3″ XDCAMHD coming, but I’d appreciated any advice on my HDX900 down convert scenario.

    Cheers,
    Peter
