Posted by Gregory Sheffer on September 17, 2006 at 12:40 amAre there any function differences between the Hd-1200a and the new HD-1400? Can you shoot with the HDX-900 and use the 1200a?

September 17, 2006 at 2:01 amYes, 1200A will even autosense what the original recording was on the HDX-900 on the fly during playback.
In other words if you mixed 720 and 1080 on the same tape the 1200A will figure it out and playback properly.
Of course you still need to set up the proper menus for outputting via firewire or downconverting etc.

September 17, 2006 at 10:13 pmThe main difference between the two decks is that thec 1400 has a flying erase head which allows proper insert and assemble editing (whereas the 1200 only allows “crash” editing). Another nice feature is built in Cine Gamma correction (which does the work of a box which costs $10000 previously). With this feature you can shoot for film out at 500% dynamic range (which otherwise creates a rather flat and low contrast origional) and apply a LUT on the way out as you capture to your NLE so you edit with a nicer picture without applying extensive color correction.
