  • Can I make footage shot at 60fps look like it was shot at 24fps?

Posted by Sean Fine on July 19, 2006 at 3:14 pm

I recently shot some footage on the varicam at 60fps. Now that we are editing we would like the footage to be in 24fps not 60fps (slomo). Am I stuck or can i make the footage look 24fps or normal speed.

    Thanks,
    Sean

I wish I had a dollar for every time this question has been asked.

If you are an ex film shooter, you already know the answer. It’s always the same. No.

There are software programs of varying degree of success that will emulate the look of 24p from both 60p and 60i. Nothing will really give you the subtle motion blur of the longer shutter duration of 24 fps vs. 60 fps and you may or may not like the way the footage looks after it has been processed.

The real magic of 24p with a 180

Is the deliverable 23.98 or 60i?

If it is 60i then you have some hope of matching incamera recording speed with transmision frame rate, but the 23.98 stuff will look jerkier.
You may get away with it depending on subject, bit like mixing interlace and progressive pictures in same project.

So what are some of these programs you mentioned? I have a project that I would like to attempt this with.

I have another question as well. Has anyone tried displaying their 60fps video on a hi quality monitor and shooting the image from the monitor at 24fps. I would think you would get pretty good results. Your feedback would be most appreciated.

    Thanks!
