Major TC issues with Varicam footage – HELP!
We shot an independent feature in 24p with the Varicam using dual system sound – The sound was recorded 29.97 Non Drop and a separate box fed both the camera, the audio, and the smart slate 29.97 Non Drop Timecode.
We digitized the video via firewire, pulling out just the 24 frames, with no issues – and then we used the 3rd party Sebsky Tools (BWF2XML does the same thing) to turn the 24bit BWF files which were delivered into .MOV files with TC so that FCP could read the TC. This appeared to work correctly.
Here’s where it gets weird:
I used TC to merge audio and video in the bins, then dragged these clips to a timeline to delete the inferior camera audio, and create a new merged clip with just the 24bit audio. The audio is more or less in sync. BUT: The audio TC does not by any means appear to match the video TC – it’s always off 10 to 20 seconds (it’s off consistently within each clip, but different clips are off by different amounts.)
This issue reveals itself in 2 ways – If I drop the TCR generator onto a clip, the generator TC does not match the TC in the viewer window. More importantly, we cannot Match Frame audio – Match Frame takes us to what it’s reading in the TC that’s been merged with the video clip, but is not the same audio material.
Easy enough, I thought, to use the Modify Timecode feature, but when I replace the audio TC with the video TC, it just automatically reverts the TC field to the incorrect information.
Can anyone point to what might be causing this or refer a 3rd party program that might be useful for manually creating new TC for our audio?
