Editing a feature documentary in FCP shot on the Varicam (an amazing camera– and I’m loving the whole 24p 720 / FCP post-flow)…

But lately FCP is having an unusually difficult time capturing the beginnings and endings of various clips. Camera battery change points seem to cause TC jumps, but there are others that seem random. Or is FCP like being overly sensitive? I’m getting about a 50% error rate on batch capturing clips. I keep having to change the TC in and out points to get it to take. The settings seem fine and I’ve played with pre-roll and deck settings.

Bottom line– just wondering if other people have had similar experiences, or found some trick to get smoother capturing from DVC-PRO-HD deck into FCP (I’m on a G5, system 10.04.4, FCP v.5.04). This can’t be normal, we’re logging clips quite cautiously.

    thanks

One more piece of info– the reason I think it’s not just the tapes is that if I quit FCP and start up again, it will often solve the problem by capturing a clip that wasn’t capturing before… Same clip, same time codes, Error message first time, but works after quitting and restarting FCP… anyone had this scenario?

    thanks

How and what are you saving your footage onto?

that sounds as if there is speed ramping or a speed change during the capture – that can cause an issue like this.-
turn off the abort capture on TC Error.
turn on make new clip on TC error.

    OUCH!!!!!
10.4.4 / QT7.04 have not been tested. That very well may be part of your issue.
