Anyone using HDlink with a 23″ cinema display?
Posted by Joseph Farris on November 29, 2005 at 4:24 pmSo I recently bought the HDLink to use with one of my Apple 23″ cinema displays as a client monitor. When I hook everything up I am left with a 15″ picture in the middle of a 23″ display. There doesn’t seem to be any way to enlarge the picture to fill the screen. Has anyone else seen this? I understand your getting pixel for pixel what the camera puts out but clients won’t like looking at a small image on a big screen. Am I better of with more of a Home LCD HDTV instead?

sorry joe
that is how the decklink works. the HDP from AJA would allow you to scale the image, but not the decklink unit.Gary Adcock

I tired using the HD Link and a 20″ cinema display for clients. I was never impressed, and the image never did the varicam justice. I recently aquired the new 17″ Pansonic HD display. This is a resonably priced professional monitor which looks great. Worth the investment as it is important to impress clients with the monitor image.
Don’t bother with trying a cheap LCD tv…they are not professional braodcast products and do not deliver the same level of performance.

November 30, 2005 at 10:54 pmHi Chris,
Is that Pansonic with the Waveform functionality. If so have you had a chance to try it out? That seems like a great value add. Do you know how the monitor looks with 1080i/1080p footage?
Thanks,

I own the 17″ BT-LH1700W. It looks great for the price. Waveform is a nice bonus. 1080p footage looks fine, but since its native resolution is only 1280 x 720 the difference is negligible.
The BT-LH900 is still the most amazing HD monitor I have seen.

December 1, 2005 at 2:13 amI just hooked a CineAlta up to the BT-LH1700W. I could definitely see the limitations of displaying a 1920 x 1080 image on a 1280x 720 resolution LCD. I dont like the way larger LCD’s look when they display less than 1:1 resolution.
However what the BT-LH1700W monitor does for the money is amazing.
Chris – I agree with you on the BT-LH900. Fantastic little monitor. Couldnt live without it, especially on a travel job.
I have used a HDLink and a 23″ Cinema Display for a couple of years now with the Varicam. Other than the initial question as to why the picture doesnt fit the whole screen, most are thrilled with the picture. Engineers are nervous about using for QC, but clients and directors love it.

December 1, 2005 at 5:59 pmHello guys,
I am glad to hear such glowing reviews of the BT-LH900. Have you all had great results with both 1080/720 resolutions? I was concerned it’s small size would make it more difficult to detect focus problems. I do like the waveform, and DC power but I was little nervous about getting it. What do you guys love about it?

Good to hear you like the BT-LH900. This LCD model has the button activated 4:3/ zoom mode, this zooms into the center of the raster to provide more resolution specifically to check focus. Once focus is optimized, press again to zoom back out to check framing.
Cheers!

How does the zoom work? Does it go up to a 1:1 pixel relationship?
Thanks,
Gary
