November 22, 2005 at 1:20 amThere is currently no capture to a 25FPS preset supported in FCP other than using a Blackmagic or Kona card. Firewire support just isn’t there for 25FPS which is frankly getting a bit frustrating.
Here’s an idea. Whay don’t all us PAL people get together and make a joint suggestion to apple to hurry up and support 25FPS Varicam capture. I personally would love to use the 1200 deck and not have to deal with uncompressed HD until I want to. Any takers?
Apple?…Apple?….Bueller?
No reply from Apple regarding this problem, and we’ve ben waiting for this for more than a year now.At least if Apple were able to give us an indication that they even cared about it, and were working on it, would be nice.

November 22, 2005 at 3:17 amFair comment. Why has this been such a drag? Is it possible do you think for Apple to do it anyway regardless of the EU? Are they not allowed to if that is the case. There is a need in teh marketplace for this. I know it would help. Surely Panasonic must find this very frustrating whoever is responsible for developing the capture at 25FPS.

ever seen any mention of 720p25 except by end users?
I had not seen it as a written spec until recently.

November 22, 2005 at 3:50 amHere in New Zealand where our delivery is mostly still SD PAL we need to be able to deliver 25FPS. Working in a FCP timeline of 25FPS whether 1080 or 720 makes a huge difference here, and currently you have to go for RAID and SDI capture to do 25FPS. I’ve done a fair bit through firewire at 23.98 and it’s great but this 25 thing is really holding up the adoption of the Varicam here.

November 22, 2005 at 2:01 pmNot sure what the EU has to do with this issue. We are not talking about transmission standards here. While I know the EU loves to regulate everything, To date I don’t know of any one be arrested to shooting footage at 720p at 25fps/60hz. But lets not give any mad bureaucracts in Brussels any ideas.
I have actually got feed back from Apple on this issue and they seem to be partially pointing the in Panasonic’s direct. To quote them:
“Unfortunately this workflow is not yet possible over FireWire. The AJ-1200A only supports the 59.94Hz frequency over FireWire, which is part of the issue”
So the AJ-1200A isn’t capable of 60hz over firewire? Any one from Panasonic feel free to chirp in on this one. As all of us in the 25p at 60hz world, would like to get to the bottom of this issue and find out if we are waiting in vain for a solution. -

November 22, 2005 at 10:41 pmI totally agree with this sentiment. One of the wonderful things about the Varicam is how it can totally unite the NTSC and PAL regions, however it seems to favour NTSC in workflow (ie, firewire and FCP FRC plugin.)
It is extremely frustrating having made the investment in the format to see this particular bump in the road still here after two and a half years.
We experience difficulty in marketing ourselves as shooters when most conversations come to this point and we have to explain that firewire is not an option, and furthermore that an investment of at least $2000.00 AUD is required to enable a workflow.
It is really unfortunate that PANSONIC chooses to be deaf to this issue.
I would be really pissed off if I didn’t love the camera so much.
