af100 long zoom lenses
Was wondering if anyone had a recommendation for a long zoom lens for the AF100. I am looking to shoot sports so am looking for something with a long range zoom (perhaps up to 100mm-400mm or 70-300mm if that exists) also a fast lens (2.0-2.8).
I have a micro 4/3rd’s to 4/3rd’s adapter and a micro 4/3rd’s to nikon adapter so would like to find a lens that will work with one of those mounts (or even just a regular 4/3rd’s).
Also I was wondering if someone can explain how mm’s with af100 lenses work. If I have a 70-200mm lens will it actually behave like a 140-400mm lens? Is this different if using a micro 4/3rd’s lens vs a nikon adapted or even a regular 4/3rd’s?

I don’t use m43 for video (yet), but I do have an m43 system (for then the Canon is too big to take along, or I need to shoot underwater).
The m43 format (4/3″ sensor) is half the size (one-quarter the area) of a full-frame 35mm. So yeah, to get the normal effect of a 50mm lens on 35mm, you use a 25mm lens on m43. My 40-150mm zoom on my Olympus EPM1 delivers essentially the same image as my 70-300mm Canon on my 6D. I’m pretty sure the EPM1 plus that and three other lenses (14-42mm kit lens, 45mm f1.8 Zuiko, and 20mm f1.7 Lumix) weight less than the 6D with standard zoom.
I think m43 is the best supported mirrorless system, that’s due to both Panasonic and Olympus playing in this field, an early start on mirrorless, Panasonic’s move to m43 camcorders (I’m interested, just found the AF100 too expensive compared to my Panny camcorders and Canon HDSLRs).
The wider aperture long lenses I know about: Panasonic makes a 35-100mm f2.8. Olympus doesn’t have a great fast-long zoom in m43, but they do have a few in the original four-thirds mount (adapters give you full support, better than going to Nikon, Canon, etc.). There’s a 35-100mm f2.0, a 90-250mm f2.8, and prime 300mm f2.8.
It’s weird… if you go down to under 100mm, there are many different options at nearly every focal length, video-oriented lenses, ultra fast, Leicas, Pannys, Zuikos, and a bunch of others. But not much on the fast long zoom for m43 yet.

Hi James – Dave is correct, the crop is 2x – so a 300mm lens would be equivalent to 600mm in full frame.
But you will not get full functionality with the long and fast Olympus 4/3 lenses and the DMW-MA-1 adapter. You will get auto metering, auto iris and push autofocus – but full time autofocus will not work.
The Panasonic AF100 lens compatibility chart shows this for the Olympus 14-35mm f2.0 (see the bottom of the chart in the “Four Thirds Lens” section – note that Panasonic mis-titles the lens itself as an Olympus micro four thirds lens :))
That said, your best bets for fast telephoto are the adapted Olympus 4/3 lenses. With adapted Nikons, you’ll get metering, but no auto-iris and no autofocus whatsoever.

Longer options are the $2500 Olympus 150mm f2.0, $6000 Olympus 90-250mm f2.8 and $7000 Olympus 300mm f2.8.
At these prices, you may want to pick one of these lenses up used. You can find the Olympus 35-100mm f2.0 for less than $2000 on eBay, for example.

I have a Panasonic 100-300mm lens. It is a mega ois. The max apature is f4. But you won’t notice it.
It was a cheap lens at $300. I use it when I’m shooting a meeting at the back of the room, football game or whatever.

Hi,
You can also buy a b4 to mtf adaptor and use (old) ENG lenses.

You will need a lens with extender and still the corners will be a bit unsharp. Because the ENG lenses are not meant to be on a large sensor camera.
But it is a cheap way to have a long lens on your af101.
I use an old 9-108 mm fujinon lens and it turns out to be a 35-200mm lens on a af101. (more or less)
And you can still use a mattebox, because it doesn’t extend to much.
